Marcelo Méndez broke his silence after his resignation from Gimnasia de La Plata: he assured that they were not "reaching the squad" and considered that the tight schedule played against them at the start of the season.
"We were brought in to play a certain way and, because of the way the squad was set up, it was becoming quite difficult for us, and we didn't want to betray our way of feeling the game," explained the Uruguayan coach in an interview with Sport 890.
He also made it clear that the turnover in the squad affected them. "Between one year and the next, 12 and 13 players left. The urgency of winning and playing every three days was complicated," he said. He added: "It was difficult to have to win and play so often, every three days, with a new squad."
Marcelo Méndez coached 32 games at Gimnasia: he won just two of the last 17 (against Atlético Tucumán and Newell's). Then, he lost 9 and drew the rest. Beyond that, he considered his time at the club "positive." "Living the experience as a coach in Argentina is good. There were several factors, results. We weren't getting to the team the way we wanted and they brought us in to play a certain way but it was difficult," he said.

Méndez also referred to the delicate situation of Matías Abaldo, who returned to Defensor Sporting of Uruguay while undergoing psychiatric treatment for mental health problems.
"I don't know what he has, but all I want is for him to be happy. I found out at a dinner that he wasn't at the training camp and I never realized what was wrong with him," the coach explained.
